SANE Scope of Practice
The purpose of the SANE examination is to assess, document, and collect forensic evidence. 24-hour on call services for are all male and female victims of sexual assault or abuse. Additionally, prophylactic treatment of STDs and prevention of pregnancy are provided following a pre-established medical protocol. The SANE conducts a physical examination, and obvious pathology or suspicious findings that are observed are reported to the victim with suggestion for follow-up care or referral.
While the SANE is not a legal advocate, rape victims are given information to assist them in anticipating what may happen next, legally. This typically includes a discussion about reporting to law enforcement. The SANE also provides emotional support and crisis intervention. The SANE initially assesses the victim’s psychological state to determine if referral or follow-up support, evaluation, counseling, or treatment is needed.
