Fort HealthCare’s School
Nurse Program celebrates
its 10-year anniversary
this January. The
program was developed in
1995 to offer the Fort Atkinson
School District qualified nursing
services by a nurse already
working for the health system.
Now, the program is in eight
school districts: Fort Atkinson,
Lake Mills, Jefferson, Marshall,
Cambridge, Deerfield,
Whitewater and Waterloo.
“The School Nurse
Program now includes student
health and prevention
services, educational programs
sponsored by Fort
HealthCare as well as a newsletter
sent to all school families,”
said Lisa Jensen, school
nurse in Fort Atkinson and
the program’s coordinator.
Fort HealthCare school
nurses act as consultants to
the district, working with students
who have health needs
while at school and providing
health education to students
and staff. They help children
understand how to live with a
disease or an illness, and they
address challenges that prevent
students from attending
school. The nurses have access
to resources from Fort
HealthCare and Fort
Memorial Hospital, including
the emergency department,
home care and the pharmacy.
“The School Nurse
Program will continue striving
to strengthen and facilitate
the educational process
in schools by improving and
protecting the health status
of children,” explained
Rosemary Berger, manager
of the Home Health and
School Nurse programs.
