Gene Indicates High Risk for Ovarian,
Breast Cancers

Women who have a personal and strong family history of breast or ovarian cancer face a very high risk of the disease themselves. These women may benefit from genetic testing. A simple blood test can tell whether a woman has inherited a flawed gene, called a mutation, that increases her risk for breast and ovarian cancer.

Can a genetic test tell with certainty whether or when a woman will get breast cancer? No. A negative result does not rule out all risk, and a positive result does not guarantee that cancer will develop. But the results may help a woman and her doctor make decisions about screenings, preventive therapies and lifestyle choices that may influence her risk and the risk of her offspring.
