Keep Eye Health in Focus

You can do a lot to protect the sight on which you rely. Here’s how:
  • Wear shades. Sunglasses help cut the exposure to sunlight that hastens cataract formation. Look for glasses that block at least 99 percent of ultraviolet light.
  • Get your eyes checked regularly. The American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests an eye exam to screen for glaucoma at least once between age 20 and 39; checkups every two to four years between age 40 and 64; and exams every year or two for people 65 and older and as frequently as needed if you have a specific eye condition that requires attention.
  • If you smoke, quit. It raises your risk for cataracts as well as for macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in people older than age 65.
If you have concerns about your eyes or your vision, call Fort HealthCare Spectrum eye Center at (920) 563-7366. Spectrum sees patients in Fort Atkinson and Whitewater.
