Girls Benefit When They’re
in the Game

Physical activity is key to girl power. Compared to those who seldom exercise, active girls are happier and smarter. They also may be less likely to be overweight, start smoking or get serious health problems, such as heart disease and diabetes.

But keeping older girls interested in physical activity takes special effort. Research shows that many girls grow less active each year they age. By age 18, some don’t exercise at all.

Parents can help foster a love for exercise by helping their daughter find an activity she’ll enjoy. It’s best to let her choose and try a number of options. Check her school or local programs for these popular fitness ideas:

  • Individual sports: swimming, cycling or running
  • Competitive sports: tennis or track
  • Team sports: softball, basketball or soccer
Provide your daughter plenty of opportunities to participate in the activities she chooses. Girls are more apt to stick with fitness programs if they are regularly involved in them. Here are some ways to encourage your daughter’s involvement:
  • Buy her good equipment.
  • Consider volunteering in her programs or training with her.
  • Help her get to practices, meets and games on time.
  • Make sure she has time away from obligations, such as babysitting, to participate in her activities.
  • Attend any competitions, and cheer her on!
If your daughter isn’t interested in any physical activities, ask her why and listen. Try to help her work out any concerns or problems, such as a poor body image. Her doctor can offer advice, too.
