Fort HealthCare Bariatric Program launches new online tools, patient diary

Thursday, July 1, 2010

Since beginning a weight-loss surgery program in 2005, Fort HealthCare has been providing top quality LAP-BAND® insertion. LAP-BAND® is a safer alternative to the well-known gastric bypass surgery, which has never been offered at Fort HealthCare.

Surgery isn’t the only high-tech offering at Fort HealthCare. In June, the Bariatric program launched a set of new online tools to help those interested in weight-loss surgery learn more about what is available locally. For anyone looking to do their own research on this very personal topic, Fort HealthCare has created a real-life online patient diary, Facebook page and a comprehensive Bariatric Surgery website.

The patient diary features 47-year-old Lisa who underwent LAP-BAND® surgery in March. As a Fort HealthCare surgical technologist, Lisa has seen many LAP-BAND® surgeries and chose it as her way to lose the weight she’s been carrying for many years. Because she has seen the operation performed, understands the level of surgical expertise and has seen many positive outcomes Lisa’s decision was an easy one to make.

Like many weight-loss surgery patients, Lisa did her own research online and found that sites featuring videos and stories from actually patients were the ones she learned the most from, and she wanted to be able to share her story with others who may be considering the procedure. Lisa’s shares success and challenge stories with readers, along with her own sense of humor. To visit her diary, go to FortHealthCare.com/Lisa.

The Fort HealthCare Facebook page features a tab on the Bariatric program. There anyone with questions can submit them online to be answered by Lisa, Patrice Stair, RN or Marc Erickson, MD. Stair is the bariatric program coordinator and Dr. Erickson performs all LAP-BAND® surgeries at Fort HealthCare. Participating in these online discussions allows anyone to get answers to their questions. The Facebook tab also features pictures of other Fort HealthCare Bariatric patients and information on the program and financing options. To participate in the discussion, visit Facebook.com/FortHealthCare and click on “Bariatric Diary.”

Finally is the new FortHealthCare.com/Bariatrics website. There prospective patients can view Lisa’s diary, learn about the healthcare professionals and process involved in the surgery, find informational session dates, explore the diet and nutrition advice for Bariatric patients and find out about financing options for the procedure. This new website is intended to provide potential Fort HealthCare patients with information that applies directly to what their experience will be like. Many sites provide generic overviews, but this is intended to offer feedback customized to Fort HealthCare’s Bariatric Program.

Marc Erickson, MD has been providing excellent LAP-BAND® care at Fort HealthCare since the program’s inception. He has performed over 140 LAP-BAND® procedures and continues to practice and add more expertise to his surgical skill set. Bariatric surgery isn’t for everyone. Fort HealthCare’s Bariatric Program requires patients to meet medical, nutritional, psychological and exercise specialists before undergoing weight loss surgery. Every qualified patient must be confident in their ability to follow the dietary, exercise and behavioral recommendations after surgery. To learn more about LAP-BAND® surgery can attend the monthly informational session held at Fort Memorial Hospital. The next session will be at 6:00 p.m. on July 13; to register call (920) 568-5244. Visit Facebook.com/FortHealthCare or FortHealthCare.com/Bariatrics for more.
