Local food producers, High Meadow Farm of Johnson Creek and Water House Foods of Lake Mills will offer local produce and baked goods for sale near the Emergency Services entrance of Fort Memorial Hospital. Sales will take place every Wednesday, weather permitting, throughout the growing season from 2:30-5:00 p.m.
Varieties of vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers will be available, changing as the season progresses. All produce, except eggs, are “certified organic.” Baked goods are made with local and organic ingredients whenever possible, many from High Meadow Farm.
Early offerings will include greens such as lettuce and Swiss chard, sorrel, sauté mix, potatoes and bedding plants like tomatoes. Eggs will become available later in the season and are grown using organic principles, meaning hens have access to fresh air, sunshine and clean food choices on a regular basis.
Foods sold locally can ripen in the field, allowing them to develop full flavor and nutrient content. Use of organic growing principles further enhances health benefits by ensuring well-balanced soil content, reduced exposure to hazardous chemicals for workers and consumers, and less air and water supply contamination. Furthermore, food produced locally travels a shorter distance from farm to plate, decreasing energy used and air pollution generated from transport. Supporting local agriculture and localized food systems keeps food dollars in the community and stimulates the local economy.
