Rock the Walk 2012 Challenged Local Residents and Workers to Get Their StepsThursday, November 29, 2012
Fort HealthCare recently challenged local residents and workers to increase their current activity level and improve their health by participating in the Rock the Walk 2012 Challenge. The 6-week challenge was open to employees of Fort HealthCare, Aztalan Engineering, Ball Corporation, Cygnus Business Media, Digi-Star, Fort Atkinson School District, Jefferson County Local Government, Jones Dairy Farm, Nasco, RateWatch, Spacesaver and Whitewater Unified School District. Residents were also invited to join participating community agencies including: Heart of the City (Fort Atkinson), Cambridge Activities Program (CAP), Rock Lake Activity Center (Lake Mills) and Working for Whitewater’s Wellness (W3).
Participants who were looking for a new exercise program or to change their current program were motivated by weekly prizes for increasing their current activity level. For six weeks, step goals and prize values increased to keep players engaged. Those who preferred activities other than walking were provided with conversion charts to help calculate the equivalent number of steps for whatever form of exercise completed.
Nearly 1,400 individuals participated in the Rock the Walk 2012 challenge. Pedometers were given to participants to help measure steps on a daily basis. A total of 494,950,631 steps were taken over the course of the challenge.
Aztalan Engineering of Lake Mills was the most active employer, whose participants took an average of 13,428 steps per day. Angie Adler of Fort HealthCare, the grand prize winner, achieved each of the increased weekly step goals throughout the competition and was entered into a raffle to win the Vision Fitness TF20 Folding Treadmill, valued at $1899.
“Rock the Walk 2012 was a great opportunity for local workers and residents to get in some physical activity while competing for prizes and bragging rights,” said Andrea Billinghurst, Fort HealthCare community programming coordinator. “More than 215,000 total miles were cumulatively traveled; equating to 8.5 trips around the world.”
More challenges will be planned throughout the upcoming year. Visit Health365Events.com to stay up-to-date on health and wellness activities happening in all of the communities Fort HealthCare serves.
