Better Hearing and Speech Month

May is Better Hearing and Speech Month, an annual observance that raises awareness about communication health and the importance of early intervention for hearing and speech disorders. Established by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), this month-long initiative encourages individuals to learn about the signs of hearing loss and communication challenges—and take action if needed. At Fort HealthCare, we recognize the vital role that healthy communication plays in every stage of life—from early childhood development to older adult wellbeing.
Why This Month Matters
Hearing loss and communication challenges can affect individuals of all ages. Approximately 37.5 million Americans live with some degree of hearing loss, according to the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). That’s nearly 15% of the U.S. adult population.
Additionally, speech and language disorders—including delays in children, stuttering, voice problems, and articulation challenges—can impact academic success, social interaction, and emotional health. Early detection and treatment can make a profound difference in building confidence and long-term communication skills.
Spotting the Signs
Early signs of hearing or speech concerns may include:
- Difficulty understanding conversations, especially in noisy settings
- Needing the TV or radio at a higher volume
- Frequent requests to repeat words
- Struggles with forming words or sentences in children
- Frustration when trying to communicate
Whether the concern is subtle or more obvious, timely support can improve quality of life and reduce long-term impact.
The Importance of Early Action
Spotting signs early makes a significant difference. Many speech and hearing issues can be managed or improved with timely support. For children, addressing these concerns early can support healthy development in language, school readiness, and peer relationships. For adults, identifying issues early can help reduce the impact on memory, emotional wellbeing, and social connection.
If you or a loved one has concerns about hearing or speech, it’s important to speak with your provider. Awareness is the first step toward better outcomes.
