Dr. Katherine Lemon of Fort HealthCare Pediatrics recently volunteered a week of time in June at the American Diabetes Association’s Camp Lakota – a camp for youth with diabetes. Camp Lakota is hosted by the Wisconsin Lions Camp in Rosholt, WI every summer. Thank you, Dr. Lemon!

Susan Hjelsand, ADA executive director, and Jenna Joswiak, camp director, both express their gratitude, “We greatly appreciate the efforts that were made to allow Katherine to attend the camp as part of her work experience. Her presence helped us to provide the camp experience to 300 children. We appreciate her ability to team with other medical staff there, that included doctors, nurses, residents, dietitians, and medical students, along with non-medical volunteers.”

Camp Lakota is an excellent place for medical staff and volunteers to experience the practical problems that children with diabetes have with home management. Dr. Lemon’s role included working with campers to understand their current diabetes regimen and to encourage them to find better ways to manage their diabetes. As part of a team of volunteers and camp counselors, she participated in educational sessions, sports, swimming, and crafts with the children.

Joswiak continues, “We commend both Fort HealthCare and Dr. Lemon for the willingness to make such a generous time commitment to an invaluable experience for our campers and staff. We strongly hope that you know how valuable you are! Thank you for participating in Camp Lakota!”
