Fort HealthCare’s Laboratory continues to help meet the organization’s mission of improving the health and well-being of our community by receiving formal accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP), based on the results of a recent onsite inspection.

Since November, all patient care activities of the Fort HealthCare Jefferson location are provided at Fort HealthCare Rockwood, 152 W. Garland St., Jefferson. This includes the medical care provided by David Rutledge, MD, and nurse practitioner Noreen Lyons.

On a regular basis, Fort HealthCare engages in a comprehensive survey of area households to determine the health related needs and behaviors of residents. The results have helped Fort HealthCare develop programs and services that addressed specific needs as described by survey participants such as greater access to cardiology and oncology services, as well as new educational offerings and wellness classes. This year, the nature of the community health assessment was modified with an eye toward President Obama’s sweeping healthcare reform legislation, The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010.

On Tuesday, November 22 starting at 6:30 p.m., William Hofmann, MD, with Fort HealthCare Ear, Nose & Throat Specialists will be hosting a FREE informational seminar about sudden hearing loss. The seminar will take place at the Fort Memorial Hospital Auditorium.

Free health screenings will be available 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Fort Memorial Hospital. Please use the Ambulatory Service entrance on McMillen Street. People with diabetes, family members and those seeking to understand their health are encouraged to participate. There will be refreshments, door prizes, information on diabetic care and living a healthy lifestyle. In addition, everyone is invited to walk some laps through the halls of the hospital. Walkers will earn tickets for prize drawings for each lap walked.

Doctor Edwin Fischer has been practicing medicine in Jefferson County for more than 30 years. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin Medical School, he trained in an environment that featured the newest and brightest technological breakthroughs. As a family medicine physician based in Lake Mills and as medical director for Fort HealthCare’s Fort Medical Group, he keeps a constant eye on the many ways technology can improve the quality of care delivered to his patients and those of other physicians.
