American Lung Association of Wisconsin Past President to Speak at Heart Fair

Pamela Wilson, MD is slated as the keynote speaker at the 2010 Healthy Heart Fair to be held Saturday, February 6 at Fort Memorial Hospital. Wilson received her medical degree from the University of Maryland and pulmonary postgraduate training at the University of Wisconsin. She has served as president of both the Wisconsin Thoracic Society and the American Lung Association of Wisconsin, receiving the latter’s Distinguished Service Award for her longtime advocacy of lung health and educational programs. She has spoken widely to medical organizations in the upper Midwest on the prevention and cessation of tobacco use and the diagnosis and treatment of chronic lung disease.

In her presentation, “Tobacco vs. Health: The Choice is Yours” Wilson discusses tobacco dependence and how it is a preventable chronic disease that adversely impacts the lives of smokers and non-smokers. The risks of continued smoking and the benefits of smoking cessation are well known. This presentation and lecture will provide information on increasing wellness in our community by curbing exposure to secondhand smoke and will explore options for improving smoking cessation outcomes for smokers willing to quit.

Those in attendance will understand the preventable, adverse impact of smoking on health, the preventable adverse impact of secondhand smoke on heart health, the importance of treating tobacco dependence as a chronic disease and what clinical interventions are used for smokers attempting smoking cessation.

The presentation will begin promptly at 11:00 a.m. following the morning’s activities: free health screenings, massages, refreshments, exercise and cooking demos to name a few. Attendee can view exhibits and learn about heart health from representatives of Fort HealthCare, the American Heart Association, UW Health and more.

Recently added was a real lung, from a pig, that will be available for viewing. The lung will show the effects of smoking on internal organs. The pig lung was provided by Nasco. The Heart Fair will be held in Classrooms A, B and C from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., when the presentation "Tobacco vs. Health: The Choice is Yours" begins in the Auditorium.
