Fort HealthCare has announced that Edwin Fischer, M.D. has been appointed medical director for all of Fort HealthCare and its subsidiary organizations.

According to Michael Wallace, President & CEO, Fischer’s current administrative role is being expanded. Fischer, who until recently maintained a full-time family practice in Lake Mills, has served in a limited capacity as medical director for Fort Medical Group since March, 1999. Fort Medical Group, a subsidiary of Fort HealthCare, currently employs more than 50 physicians, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare providers. Clinics offering primary and specialty care are located in Fort Atkinson, Cambridge, Edgerton, Elkhorn, Johnson Creek, Jefferson, Lake Mills, Stoughton and Whitewater.

Fort HealthCare includes Fort Memorial Hospital, a modern, fully accredited, acute- and subacute-care facility with 110 licensed beds. More than 100 physicians are on staff. Other services offered by Fort HealthCare include occupational medicine, wound care, rehabilitation and sports medicine, home health, a preferred provider network for employers known as FortCare, urgent care and more.

As Medical Director, Fischer will focus on Fort Medical Group opportunities such as developing clinical measures for improved quality and patient satisfaction. He will also serve as physician champion for the continued development of Fort HealthCare’s electronic medical record systems.

“I am very excited about this expanded role for Dr. Fischer and believe it will have a positive impact on our organization,” stated Wallace. “This is a reflection of the significant growth both Fort HealthCare and Fort Medical Group have experienced during the last several years.”

Beginning in January, Fischer will revise his patient appointment schedule to part-time, with afternoon hours at the Fort HealthCare Lake Mills Clinic where he has practiced family medicine since 1981. Sara Barnes, DO, a specialist in family medicine, has joined Fort Medical Group and is accepting patients four days a week in Lake Mills. She will also see patients at Fort HealthCare Johnson Creek and at the Fort HealthCare Wound & Edema Center.

Fischer received his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin Medical School. He completed his family medicine residency through the University of Wisconsin at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, and is board certified.  He has served as President of Fort Medical Group as well as Chief of Staff at Fort Memorial Hospital.
