Fort HealthCare Movin and Losin program brings families together to improve health and wellness

Fort HealthCare clinicians introduce a new session of Movin’ and Losin’, a family-based wellness program that targets weight, nutrition and activity in both children and parents.

The program builds on the strength of the family while encouraging families to incorporate healthier eating and fitness habits into their everyday lifestyle. Parents learn skills to curb poor eating habits and sharpen limit-setting skills to prompt children (ages 8-15) toward a healthier lifestyle. Children accept more responsibility for nutrition and activity and, in response, food becomes less important, activity more exciting and the child’s weight begins to stabilize.
Movin’ and Losin’ is aprotective approach so almost any child could benefit from participating. All potentially harmful or distressing techniques are avoided, including rigid or low-calorie diets. Weight loss is gradual, which includes weight maintenance while growing. The exercise component stresses overall fitness, including endurance, flexibility and strength.
The program was first introduced in September with 10 families participating. Most participants noted that they became more aware the importance of physical activity and healthy eating, and, the importance of making long-lasting behavior changes related to their overall health. Participants also appreciated the opportunity to learn as a family and had fun exercising together.
Fort HealthCare’s Movin’ and Losin’ program will begin Tuesday, January 14 and meet for 10 weeks. Classes will be Tuesday evenings, 6:45-7:45 p.m. at the Fort HealthCare Therapy & Sport Center at 1504 Madison Avenue, Fort Atkinson. Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Heidi Jennrich and Occupational Therapist Alyssa Maurer will cover a different topic each week. Each class will include a family activity utilizing Fort HealthCare’s new Railyard fitness equipment. Railyard fitness is a portable obstacle course that has received rave reviews from physical education, athletic condition, personal training and institutional fitness experts worldwide. Cost is $50 per family and there are a limited number of spaces available.
