Free Men's Health Talk

Health, Wellness & You
Wednesday, September 12, 2012

The urologists of Fort HealthCare Urology Associates are hosting a free men’s health talk on Tuesday, September 18th. Check-in for the seminar begins at 6:00 p.m. and the seminar will start at 6:30 p.m. at the Fort Memorial Hospital Auditorium in Fort Atkinson. Men who suffer from erectile dysfunction (ED) and bladder control problems (stress urinary incontinence) – which are common conditions often caused by diabetes, prostate cancer, or cardiovascular disease – are encouraged to attend. To RSVP for this event, call (877) 433-2873.

ED can affect men of all ages, although it is more common among older men. It is normal for men to occasionally experience ED. However, if the problem becomes chronic, it can adversely affect relationships, emotional health and self-esteem.

Causes of ED include heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, neurologic disease, anxiety, depression, stress and tobacco, alcohol or other substance abuse. Metabolic syndrome is also a risk factor for ED in men older than age 50 or who have low testosterone or other hormone levels or have experienced physical trauma or injury. ED may also be a symptom of an underlying health condition.

The good news for patients with ED is that there are many medical and surgical treatments available for restoring erections and intimacy.

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) causes urine to leak out of the bladder during activity. SUI may occur when the structures that help hold urine in your bladder become weak. You may experience SUI with constant coughing, laughing, or sneezing, being overweight, when exercising, lifting something heavy or simply as a result of aging. It may also occur in men who have had prostate surgery.

If ED and/or SUI become ongoing problems, talk with your doctor. Helpful information regarding these conditions and what can be done about them will be shared at the free presentation.
