Wednesday, September 29, 2010
FORT ATKINSON – Jonathan McLaughlin, MD, a general surgeon with Fort HealthCare Surgical Associates, is hosting a free seminar about recent advances in the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) on Thursday, October 7 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Fort Memorial Hospital Auditorium in Fort Atkinson. The seminar is educational, and open for anyone to attend. Please register by calling the Fort HealthCare Health Promotion department at (920) 568-5244, or register online.
GERD is a condition in which the stomach contents (food or liquid) leak backwards from the stomach into the esophagus, irritating it, and causing chronic heartburn and other symptoms. Chronic GERD can also lead to a precancerous condition called Barrett’s Esophagus.
The most common symptoms of GERD are:
• Feeling that food may be left trapped behind the breastbone
• Heartburn, or a burning pain in the chest
• Nausea after eating
• Pain relief from over-the-counter antacids
These conditions may lead to continued dependence on prescription medications for relief.
Tens of millions of Americans suffer with daily heartburn or other symptoms of reflux such as regurgitation, chronic cough, hoarseness and dental erosions. Until recently, these people faced either a lifetime of daily medications, or the risks of invasive surgery. Now there are better options available. At the seminar, Dr. McLaughlin will discuss new non-invasive and minimally-invasive treatments for long term relief from GERD and related disorders. To learn more, visit www.FortHealthCare.com/GERD.
