Lake Mills Urgent Care open house entranceThe Fort HealthCare Lake Mills Urgent Care clinic has been operating for many years. The urgent care clinic decided to host the open house as a special health information event to help keep our communities safe this summer and beyond. The information focused primarily on basic first aid, and when it is most appropriate to seek emergency versus urgent care.

The clinic presented information about poison control, stroke risks and signs, sun safety and skincare, the importance of hand washing to prevent the spread of the flu and germs, tips for keeping a healthy home, flu vaccines, how to identify ticks and prevent tick bites, information for safe medication management, as well as information about gastroesophageal reflux disease – also known as acid reflux, chronic heartburn, or GERD – as sometimes the symptoms of a serious case mimic the symptoms of a heart attack. The CPR demonstrations were hands-on, and included two short videos about “hands only” CPR.

Additionally, the Rock Lake Activity Center in Lake Mills had program and facility information
available for guests to take with them. Information about Fort HealthCare’s Health 365 community wellness program and website were also shared. To learn more about any of these programs, visit,, or

Fort HealthCare is committed to making sure our communities stay safe and healthy. To provide the best care possible, it is important for individuals to know when to access a primary care physician’s office, an urgent care clinic, or an emergency room. Depending upon the condition or injury, accessing the correct facility for treatment can save you money – but more importantly – can save time, which is a very critical factor in an emergency.

Urgent care centers are designed to complement a primary care doctor’s office by providing a place to treat minor injuries and illnesses often seen at a doctor’s office, but cannot wait until the office is open. Urgent care services are considered to be extended clinic hours, where one can come with urgent care needs without an appointment. It is appropriate to go to an urgent care setting if you or a family member experience:

• A sprain or strain
• Minor cuts
• Minor burns
• Eye infections
• Cold and flu-like symptoms that haven’t improved

It is appropriate to call an ambulance or seek emergency care for:
• Persistent vomiting and diarrhea
• A fever above 102 degrees
• Severe pain
• Head trauma with loss of consciousness
• Chest pain
• Difficulty breathing
