Leadership at Fort HealthCare recognizes the critical role the Rock River Free Clinic plays in ensuring the health of our most vulnerable residents. Since 2003, the clinic has operated on a limited basis with volunteer clinicians and support staff. Consequently, many of these economically disadvantaged persons requiring urgent medical care sought services they likely could not afford at Fort Memorial Hospital's emergency department or urgent care clinics. With that in mind, David Rutledge, MD, a family medicine physician at Fort HealthCare Jefferson for twenty nine years, was recently appointment full-time Medical Director at the Rock River Free Clinic.

Fort HealthCare was recently recognized for its implementation of a comprehensive electronic medical record (EMR) system by HIMSS Analytics, a wholly owned not-for-profit subsidiary of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). HIMSS Analytics recognized that Fort HealthCare has achieved Stage 6 on the EMR Adoption Model (EMRAM). Healthcare systems routinely track progress in completing the HIMSS eight stages (0-7) of successful electronic health record implementation and utilization.

Christopher Kurtz, M.D., a UW Health System Cardiologist, will speak on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at Fort Memorial Hospital. His presentation, "What Everyone Should Know About Heart Health" will focus on coronary artery disease. Those in attendance will learn how it develops, risk factors, strategies for prevention and general considerations regarding treatment.

Every now and then, a baby arrives a few weeks before the parents-to-be had planned. In those cases, Fort HealthCare Great Expectations Birthing Center nurses help better prepare parents with the help of CPR Anytime, a kit produced by the American Heart Association that allows anyone to learn infant CPR basics in only 22 minutes.

Representatives of Fort HealthCare gathered around a very large check to celebrate the recently completed goal topping United Way campaign. The campaign ran for a number of weeks this fall, and resulted in the donation of $39,132 to United Way of Jefferson and North Walworth Counties. The donation was the result of employee fundraising activities that included a general appeal with payroll deductions, incentives for time off and other rewards for increased or early giving, a silent auction and department sponsored bake sales.

True to its mission, the Rock River Free clinic provides access to free health services for low income and uninsured individuals. And, in these days of economic hardship, the number of persons who suddenly find themselves without health insurance is growing steadily.

Jayden Heffner, son of Katelyn Heffner of Cambridge, arrived at 11:37 a.m. on Monday, January 2 at the Fort Memorial Hospital Great Expectations Birthing Center. He was delivered by Rebecca Reim, MD weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces and was 20.5 inches long. Jayden is the first baby born in Jefferson County in 2012.
