Fort HealthCare has developed a community website for posting, sharing and browsing local health and wellness events. Health365Events.com goes hand-in-hand with Fort HealthCare's mission to “Improve the health and well-being of our community.” The purpose of Health365Events.com is to make it easier for non-profit organizations to share details of their community fitness and wellness events and for users to find events they want to participate in.

In March, the group collected stuffed animals to donate to area EMS squads and area emergency departments, including that at Fort Memorial Hospital. Approximately 500 stuffed animals were collected by 193 students to give away to help calm the fears of sick or injured children.

Fort HealthCare Business Health at Fort Memorial Hospital will present a drug and alcohol training seminar that is mandatory for supervisors and owner/operators of commercial motor vehicles. The seminar, which will be held Wednesday, May 18, 2011 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Fort Memorial Hospital, is a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Department of Transportation compliance seminar offered to the local business community.

The Fort HealthCare Surgical Associates and Business Services Office invite the community to attend their open house celebration on Saturday, April 2 between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. The open house is an opportunity for individuals and families to meet Fort HealthCare's surgeons and staff, and tour the new building. The new building, which opened on March 1, is located at 210 and 212 Milwaukee Avenue West, adjacent to Lorman Bicentennial Park in Fort Atkinson.

Colon cancer is the third most common cancer and one of the most preventable. Kathryn Banbury of Lake Mills knows this first-hand. Because of a brush with colon cancer, she strongly encourages people to schedule a first-time colonoscopy. “A colonoscopy is not painful, as one might expect, and the procedure lasts 30 minutes or less in many cases. Scheduling a colonoscopy is so much easier than dealing with cancer.”

On Diabetes Alert Day, March 22, anyone can come to Fort Memorial Hospital to have a free blood glucose screening and have their risk for diabetes assessed by certified diabetes educators from Fort HealthCare's ADA-recognized program for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Screenings will be held on the ground floor in the diabetic education room from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in classrooms B and C. No registration is required for this free event.

For that reason, Fort HealthCare is making a special effort during March's Colon Cancer Awareness Month to convince age-appropriate individuals to receive a first-time screening colonoscopy. Marc Erickson, MD provided answers to some common questions, hoping to alleviate some of the fear associated with this procedure.
