Steel Away Café offering Grab 'n Go and breakfast options

Thursday, August 9, 2012

Steel Away Cafe food service teamFort HealthCare’s Steel Away Café is pleased to announce that healthy and affordable dining choices are available 12 hours per day, including breakfast. Led by executive chef, Colleen Miller, the café is a prime dining option for staff of and visitors to Fort Memorial Hospital and has been growing in popularity with community members, as well. Extra effort is made to use fruits and vegetables that are locally grown, locally-raised grass-fed meats, cheeses and spices from the region, handmade whole wheat pastas, quality soups made from scratch with low-fat ingredients, homemade pies and decadent desserts from well-known regional bakeries.

Menu planning is seasonally appropriate and offers gluten-free, vegetarian options and a seafood choice nearly every day. Salad bar offers a special salad each day, homemade dressings and vinaigrettes and fresh vegetables and toppings.

The new Grab ‘n Go stations will offer prepared salads and salad bar, sandwiches and wraps, hand-tossed pizza by the slice, homemade soups, fruit cups and yogurt parfaits, raw vegetables with hummus and a variety of beverage options.

On weekends, hot breakfast is available and includes items like smoked trout hash with a fried egg, egg and Canadian bacon potato galatte, raspberry pancakes with Wisconsin maple syrup and meats from Jones Dairy Farm. Many of the breakfast items are the same as those offered on Room Service menus for patients in the hospital.

Costs are kept reasonable by redirecting money that was once spent on soda and processed foods to more natural, healthy ingredients. Prices range from $1 to $3.50 and salad bar is $.35 per ounce. Coffee and water is always available free of charge.

Fort HealthCare has made major changes to food served to patients, guests, new mother’s and even children at the Kids Konnection daycare center. New mothers are sent home from the Birthing Center with a basket of healthy snacks like trail mix, oatmeal cookies, mineral water, and fresh and dried fruits. Children at the daycare are eating vegetables grown in their own garden dipped in ranch dressing (made without preservatives) and enjoying the same foods served at the hospital, like grilled salmon or pork roast. The new menus are part of the ongoing Healthiest Community initiative which will help the Fort HealthCare service area become “the healthiest community in Wisconsin.”

The Steel Away Café hours are 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. every day. Grab ‘n Go breakfast is 7:00-11:15 a.m., hot lunch 11:15 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., Grab ‘n Go lunch/dinner 1:15 to 7:00 p.m., hot dinner 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Hot breakfast is available on weekends only from 7:00 to 10:00 a.m.
