Maintaining a healthy weight offers many health benefits including reduced risk for type II diabetes, cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer, gallbladder problems, infertility, high blood pressure, depression and stress on joints and muscles. Not only are the physical aspects of an unhealthy weight difficult to manage, but treatment for many of these chronic conditions can be costly. To help reduce your risk for these and other illnesses, Fort HealthCare is offering the Transitions Lifestyle Weight-Loss Class.

The Transitions Lifestyle System utilizes a model of choosing foods that have a low sugar (glycemic) index with a goal of keeping one’s blood sugar at an even level throughout the day. The glycemic index is a numerical measure of how food elevates blood sugar and affects the rate of metabolism in the body. According to a 2005 study published in The Journal of American Medicine Association, when compared to other popular diets such as Atkins, Ornish, Weight Watchers and Zone, individuals on the Transitions Lifestyle Diet experienced a weight loss nearly twice that of persons on other diets studied after 12 weeks.

Beth Schmitz, a registered nurse at Fort HealthCare and a certified Transitions Lifestyle Coach, is emphatic about the success of the program. “Many people do not understand that
by dieting, you actually decrease your metabolism by 10 to 15 percent, but a speedy metabolism is what keeps energy burning efficiently in the body. The Transitions Lifestyle System is not a diet, but an easy-to-follow program for learning how to maintain your blood sugar level and boost metabolism to feel better and succeed in losing weight,” said Schmitz.

Sue Ott, registered nurse and customer service representative of Fort HealthCare Business Health, has personally experienced the success of losing weight using the Transitions Lifestyle System. Ott joined the Fort HealthCare Transitions program in September 2008, and succeeded in losing 25 pounds. Ott continues to improve her lifestyle even after she completed the program. “I found that I was able to incorporate the Transitions way of eating into my lifestyle and lost an additional 25 pounds after completing the class and have maintained my weight loss of 50 pounds,” Ott states. “I decided to try Transitions because I realized that I had to do something about my weight. One of the best rewards that I have found is that I am able to go up and down stairs much quicker and without pain in my knee. I have also become a role model for others including family and friends. Both my daughter and sister took the class this year and have been very successful.” Sue’s progress can be seen on the images at the bottom of the page.

The Transitions Lifestyle System program is offered in a casual group setting, and is taught by Beth Schmitz and Kathy Kalvaitis. Classes are one hour, once per week, and 12 weeks long. New class sessions begin the week of January 11 in Whitewater, Lake Mills and Fort Atkinson. For about the cost of three fast food meals per week, an individual can learn how to succeed at losing weight and greatly improve their health.
