RSV on the Rise

Pediatrics

Cold and flu season is upon us. At Fort HealthCare, we are seeing an increase in viral illnesses in our youngest population. In the last two weeks we are seeing increased numbers of RSV (Respiratory syncytial virus) in our community. Over the last two winters we had less viral illnesses (colds) and this was one that was not as prevalent. But now we are back to a typical winter for viral upper respiratory illnesses and the average per year is 8-10 colds, which may feel like your child is continually getting sick.

RSV is a common illness but can be harsher on our youngest patients. It does cause sore throat, fevers, runny noses, cough, and decreased appetite. Young children sometimes wheeze (bronchiolitis) with this illness. The mucus is thicker and stickier than some other viruses. We still treat it like any other cold. Antibiotics won’t treat viral illnesses and there is no vaccine yet for this illness.

For most viruses, the management is the same: stay home, stay well-hydrated, get lots of sleep and take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever when needed.

You can always reach out to our clinic by phone or MyCompass with concerns. Our staff will help direct you if home care is advised, we need to see your child in the office, or your child should be seen in the Urgent Care or Emergency Room depending on symptoms.  We are here to help in any way we can.
