As summer rolls on, the school year—and sports season—will be here before we know it. Whether your child is already training for fall athletics or just thinking about joining a team, now is the time to schedule their well-child visits and sports physicals.

These appointments help meet school health requirements and make sure your child is healthy and ready for the school year to participate safely. These exams help providers evaluate physical development, check for risk factors or past injuries, and ensure that your child is physically fit for the demands of their chosen activity. Updated immunizations are another essential component, and it is important to verify that all vaccinations are current before school begins. The Wisconsin Immunization Registry (WIR) is a useful tool for parents to print their child’s immunization records to provide them to their schools as needed.

What to Expect During a Sports Physical & Well-Child Visit

Sports physicals and well-child visits typically include a full health history review and physical exam. Your provider may ask about symptoms during exercise, family history of cardiac issues, current medications, and previous injuries. The physical exam portion checks height, weight, vital signs, vision, heart, lungs, and musculoskeletal health.

Many schools require these evaluations before a student can participate in practices or games. Any sports physical completed after April 1 is valid for the following two school years, making summer the perfect time to get it done.

Early Appointments Are Available

Fort HealthCare has set aside appointment slots between July 14 and August 15 at multiple clinics, making it easy for families to get scheduled ahead of the busy back-to-school season. Appointments are available at all Fort HealthCare primary care clinics and Rock River Community Clinic. Even if your child isn’t currently a patient, they can still be seen—new patient appointments can be combined with a sports physical.

Peace of Mind for Parents and Athletes

Regular physicals help detect health concerns early and prevent injury. Even if your child isn’t currently experiencing symptoms, these appointments are an important part of growing up healthy. Most insurance plans cover these visits, and providers can also review and sign any required forms during your appointment.

At Fort HealthCare, we’re proud to support student athletes and help families stay ahead of the season. Make scheduling your child’s physical part of your summer checklist—it’s one less thing to worry about when school starts.
