Brief History

Fort Memorial HospitalEarly in 1942, the small hospital that served Fort Atkinson and the surrounding area closed its doors. Concerned citizens rallied the community, appealing for donations to someday fund a new hospital. Meanwhile, these citizens leased the former hospital to continue to provide care until a new hospital could be built. The community stepped forward with great generosity funding the efficient 62-bed Fort Atkinson Memorial Hospital which began caring for patients in 1950.

The hospital was, and remains, a memorial to the brave men and women if this vicinity who served with the armed forces of the United States of America in World War I and World War II.

Fort Memorial Hospital today is a modern, fully accredited, 42 licensed bed facility with more than 100 physicians on staff, providing caring service to a community of neighbors living in Fort Atkinson, Johnson Creek, Jefferson, Whitewater, Lake Mills, Cambridge, Palmyra and the surrounding area.
