Alcohol Awareness Month

General Health

Drinking too much alcohol increases people’s risk of injuries, violence, drowning, liver disease, and some types of cancer. The good news? We can all do our part to prevent alcohol misuse or abuse.

Alcohol Awareness Month can make a big difference in helping spread the word about different strategies for preventing alcohol misuse/abuse and encourage communities, families and friends to get involved.

When it comes to what you can do to help, here are a few ideas:

  1. Encouraging friends and family members to make small changes can go a long way. Addictions can be hard to change abruptly, but small changes can help lead to bigger changes for better health.
  2. Keep track of drinking and setting limits on drinks.
  3. Share tips or experiences that you may have.
  4. Ask doctors and nurses to talk with your friends or family members about the benefits of drinking less or quitting.

The NCADD has a tremendous amount of information on Alcohol addiction that can be read here.

How drinking less or quitting can help you:

  1. Lower your blood pressure
  2. Lower risk of injury or violent crime
  3. Avoid health problems like heart disease, stroke, some types of cancer and liver problems
  4. Avoid unintended pregnancy
  5. Lose weight
  6. Save money
