Fort HealthCare recognizes importance of volunteers during National Volunteer Week

Thursday, April 18, 2013

Fort HealthCare recognizes its wonderful volunteers during National Volunteer Week—April 21-27. The week focuses on inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek out ways to engage in their communities.

The Fort HealthCare Partners are members of a voluntary organization composed of men and women from the Fort HealthCare service area. ”Our volunteers bring great comfort and cheer to patients and visitors,” remarked Kari Behling, manager of volunteer services. “They donate countless hours, adding significantly to the hospital’s high standards of patient care and services.”

Volunteers are also instrumental in raising funds for specific projects. There is wide variety of volunteer programs to take part in including annual education scholarships, patient escort, mail/supplies/flower deliveries, Partners’ Coffee Shop and Gift Shop, clerical support, school tours, hospitality cart, greeter ambassador and more.

In addition to the intangible benefits of volunteering, Fort HealthCare offers several benefits in gratitude to their members and volunteers including discounts, special privileges, free newsletters, free annual flu shot, invitations to special events and activities, free refreshments while volunteering, and health and wellness class discounts.

Established in 1974 and sponsored by Points of Light, National Volunteer Week has grown every year, encouraging individuals and their respective communities to be at the center of social change—actively demonstrating their collective power to foster transformation.

There are many intangible benefits to volunteering including making new friends and contacts, increasing social and relationship skills, increasing self-confidence, combating depression and other physical ailments, providing career experience and job skills, and adding fun and fulfillment to daily life.

Men and women as young as 14 years of age can volunteer at Fort HealthCare. Volunteers are currently needed in several service areas at Fort Memorial Hospital.
